The Story Beneath the Story
On looking beyond what happened to understand why it matters.
We are surrounded by stories. They appear in headlines, on screens, in conversations, and in passing moments we barely notice. Most of these stories tell us what happened. Fewer take the time to explain why it happened. Even fewer ask what it means.
In my work, I’m always searching for that second story.
It rarely announces itself. It hides in the pauses between answers, in the contradictions, in the conditions people live in but do not speak about. It lives in timelines, in memories, in the structures that shape choices long before anyone picks up a microphone.
Finding the second story requires something simple but not easy: listening longer, observing carefully, and resisting the rush to frame too early.
Only then can we begin to make sense — not just of events, but of each other.
